has anybody had any experience with incar navigation systems in the algarve. if so has it been usefull or a wast of time.
I am thinking of getting some kind of electronic map as I will be doing a lot of miles within the algarve region for my work.
thanks

I looked at this some while back, I thought it would be a good excuse to get a pda.
Can't find any links now, but I read that the quality of mapping in Portugal is nothing like as good as the UK. I think the OS have spoiled us. I think that the towns are fairly good, but a lot of country roads and ancillary data are missing, which would have made it a bit pointless for me.

My 'silver surfer' parents and their friends have driven all over Southern Portugal, Spain and havent got lost once. Driver uses a real hi tech navigation system called The Wife
The only problem with this system is that its liable to direct you to any shopping centre, explodes when driver drives on left and there isn't an off button when GNR pull you over

I have the latest bells and whistles system installed.......real waste of time as all the new roads here (Well new to Data Base.......which is latest !) throw the system into telling me to get back on a Digitised road all the time......Maps are better and I have noticed that recent Portuguese maps are much better thatn 2 years ago.

don't worry about it,
after a week you'll now all the roads,
whe're talking about the algarve,
not london or paris or even lisbon....

TomTom navigation
I recently spent a couple of weeks staying in Carvoeiro and travelling around the Algarve. I have a TomTom Go portable Sat Nav system with the additional 'Maps of Western Europe' detailed down to street level, (not the maps that come included), but an additional £105 worth. They come on 4 CD's and contain street level mapping for the whole of Western Europe. This obviously includes Carvoeiro and the other towns in the Algarve. Most roads are included, however some are missed off. This is down to the lack of TeleAtlas mapping available to TomTom. However updates will be regulary released. I found that Faro has street level detail right down to house numbers, but Carvoeiro/Albuferia etc just had the main routes in and out of the towns. The maps appear to be very up to date with accurate and easy to follow voice and visual 3D instructions. Follow the links for further details, I highly recommend it to anyone wishing not to get lost when travelling anywhere in Europe !
