Learn Portugese

Post by Guest54 »

Me and my wife want to leard Portugese in a quick course.
We do know a lot of words, but to understand and speak is difficult.
Is there a private school or something in the neighbourhood of Carvoeiro?
We know there is one in Faro, but we do not want to travel 5 times a week to faro.

This was of interest to me too as I'm thinking of buying a place locally and would like to learn the language.

The nearest courses I've found on the internet are through www.cactuslanguage.com who do courses in Faro and Portimao.

Would be great if anyone else knew of anything more local.

Try the Almansor hotel, they used to have a guy up there that used to teach.

The Junta in carvoeiro have a couse every year (thats next to Cassy's bar) on the road to Lagoa. The CLCC in Jardim Gil Eanes, portimão have courses for all levels. Playoasis (on the new road between Sesmarias and Ferragudo) have a small informal class on Wedensday mornings with the added bonus that you can take your children to play in their soft play equipment.

I must say that its nice to hear of you wanting to learn Portuguese and I certainly wish you luck in finding a suitable quick course.
Its always been my intention to improve my Portuguese but to my shame I never do!
May I ask if youre living in Carvoeiro ?
If youre in UK --I can recommend a PDQ (pretty damn quick) language course with book and 4 cassettes. Its very clear and easy to follow ( at the moment Im on German one). If you are in UK -it could give you a good start.
Each year, before an Algarve trip --I take up my Portuguese book & tapes and practise to refresh myself. But nothing really beats getting amongst the Portuguese people, talking as much as possible. Theyre mostly kind folk and wont laugh at your attempts -they will take it as a compliment that you are at least trying.
When I lived there I got by with my attempts (its not an easy language) but couldnt roll my "RRs" deep enough!
My friend Maria spent half an hour once trying to get me to say "Mexilhoeiro Grande" properly --she then gave up-she was in hysterics by then! I still cant say it properly years later!
Even if you only have a little -get out and use it --dont lose it!
Meanwhile I wish you every success in "Lingua Portuguese"! Ellie

There is a language school in Lagoa called Centro de Línguas. The telephone number is 282 341491 and the email is multicentro@hotmail.com & I know that they do Portuguese lessons for foreigners either in groups or on a one to one basis.

We did a course at Interlingua in Portimao and we think it is perfect! We did 5 days, 4 hours each day and a bit of homework. We enjoyed it very much. It is not too expensive for what you get. The teacher, Katia, is a lovely and patient person. We can recommand this school from the bottom of our heart!
