What I find amusing is that Americans are rushing to buy hybrids because fuel is so expensive, we pay three times the amount (now nearly £5 per UK gallon!). I know the percentage rise at the pump is much more in the US and the distances are much more, but it is still quite funny.
Ellie, if you are driving down, don't forget the motorway tolls. We paid around £100 I think in our nightmare-towing-a-caravan-when-it-was-a-bit-hot trip.
The caravan has now been eaten by mice. Not all of it, just the wiring, pipes, badminton rackets, paracetamol, bedding etc.

Hi Cowboy, I found this on the site you mentioned.cowboy wrote:Ellie, Try this site...... http://www.angelfire.com/ri/EuroDelivery/gas.html
Netherlands Euro - - - - 1.25 (unleaded) 0.85 (diesel)
Here an update from Shell today:
Prijzen per: 10-08-2005
Euro 95 Ultra Laag Zwavel 1.415
Super plus Ultra Laag Zwavel 1.469
Shell Diesel zwavelvrij 1.075
V-Power 1.464
V-Power Diesel 1.145
I think the prices of fuel in the Netherlands are the highest in Europe or maybe even in the world.

Hi elle,
You can look at http://www.viamichelin.com and there on the front page you can see two boxes with the heading driving directions. Type in your Departure and Destination and up will come your route along with an estimated cost of your journey including tolls (you can configure options for the journey, like the average price of fuel and economy of your car).
I find it amazingly helpful, hope you do too.

Sounds like that answers your question on fuel costs Ellie.
Just to add weight to pm's comments. Hazel and her sister drove down to Monaco in June to meet her husband. They were towing a large caravan with a diesel vehicle, but total cost of fuel and tolls was £1100!!
They did drive quite a distance thru the tunnel down to Monaco then across to Central area and up the west side back to Calais. They were there for 2 months.
Dave.

We went straight down the motorway to Paris and then another to Bordeaux. The peripherique was a bit scary, but it was extremely hot and during the rush hour. Driving by yourself you would need a very clear idea of the road layouts and which junction you wanted, you can't stop and think. This was www.theaa.com route, I think we got to Tours 1st night, just into Spain 2nd and just into Portugal 3rd.
How they differentiate this bloke http://www.dukevideo.com/products/1589.htm from French commuters in renault 5's I don't know.

Thanks for that Peter!
Yep..Hub will be driving alone..I've just told him your suggested route but as I say..he's not tried that way before..could be prob for him?I can recall our getting a bit lost once at Bordeaux (which isn't unusual for us
)
I just had look at that 'motorcyle' site...have you ever biked anywhere?
My cousin..whos in his early 60s now....goes all over the continent/particularly France on his 'Harley' with wife on pillion! They love it
H was just saying about 'Triumph' making brill comeback?
I'd love to have a go on one..but don't know if I'd be daring enough now
