I think every language can sound nice if it is spoken by someone with a nice voice and accent and I don't necessarily mean the most "posh" accent...in fact, a man (or woman) speaking English with a "plum in their mouth" is a real turn off for me, just as much as a strong cockney is very grating on the ears. Says me with my "oh cor blimey mate south London accent":P

It's like David Beckham...not my type, but considered to be Mr Sexy by many women and gay men alike...but that voice...so squeaky!

By the way Sundance lent me "A Year in the Merde" last week. I finished it at the weekend...so funny. Many of the situations were so similiar to things that happen here.

I think pm it isn't necessarily the way people speak but what they say that is common. Having said that I think whatever the accent someone has, there is no excuse for lazy English. I HATE hearing bu'er or wa'er...where did the "t's" disappear to?

Yes..I agree Bruxhy about lazy English..I was brought up by a mother who wouldn't let me 'drop' an H...who insisted I sounded my 'T's!!
She was a stickler! ...
In saying that..I worked in the City London and one of my mates was a true Cockney..from Bow..and she never altered her speech at all...not for anyone! She was herself!.. self-assured, clever,witty girl..didnt give a monkeys....I'd rather someone like that than any pretentious prat thats for sure!
I like to sit in Colombos bar with my friends Marcus & Geninia& Annette..and listen to their German conversation..and I pick up/learn little bits from them!
Had Italian boyfriend once..and yes! Loved the sound of his tongue..if you know what I mean..he was SO romantic..handsome too..trouble was..
I couldn't understand him ..
but I did get the 'gist' of his words

you're all missing the point in this topic, bruxinha how do you reckon that people in london would fell if anytime you go back you only speak portuguese just because you're living in portugal?

and ellie you've lived 2 years in portugal if i'm not mistaken, and every time you went back to the uk did you speak portuguese? i believe not !

that's why people in carvoeiro don't speak french in shops specially in august, why would they speak french to a portuguese national? most of the french speaking tourists in august ARE portuguese imigrants in france, and apart from the language they've also learned to be arrogant

Maybe I have been unlucky so far, but most of the French and Spanish I have run into lately speak nothing but french or spanish - now French I can just about stumble by on, but a spaniard who does not wish to understand my espanholgues will leave me with no alternative other than to say "hasta la vista, baby".

That said, I have also met a lot of Portuguese immigrants who are truely better at french than they are at Portuguese. So if you adopt one language, I guess it is probably best to stick to it rather than risk becoming a language cripple who does not speak any language 100%.

Yes, you are correct I wouldn't dream of speaking Portuguese to English people in shops etc in the UK. Number one reason being they wouldn't understand a word! Well, unless I was in Norfolk or some parts of North London, where they are a large number of Portuguese of course.

It does seem that the majority of these Portuguese immigrants of France are complete idiots. They are just showing off while they are "en vacances" I suppose. Rise above it I'd say. They are not worth having a conversation with anyway by the sound of it.

However, Gambrinus may also have a point. I just met a little English boy, whose parents moved to Italy a while ago and his Italian is a lot better than his English.

Anyway, only another few weeks and they will "retourent en France"

I personally think that when in a country you should at least make the effort to say hello, goodbye and thank you and not expect people to speak your language.
