Well then Sharen he can't be a proper Muslim can he? Everyone knows that Muslims are swarthy chaps carrying assault rifles (which they put down in the evenings in order to impregnate at least 10 women in order to get the numbers up), who are sworn to overthrow the royal family and subject Queen Camilla to some ghastly torture.
Have you considered that he may instead be a mullion?

sexy wiggle just ain't my thing I'm afraid - with the flip flops you are talking about I think it would only be unattractive rippling of flesh and a twisted ankle - I'm happy to stomp about in my DM sensible sandals - I'll leave the girliness to you - you do it so well.

Clever (that's irony by the way) Guest - post on the weekend when Mods are around less - hopefully one of them will pick up on this post and delete it pretty quick.

Your grasp of any facts is negliable, your manners - non-existent, your command of the english language and how to use it - pitiful. I am sorry but there is almost nothing in your post that is even barely accurate starting with your knowledge and perception of the forum members.

And finally, Islamic fundamentalists are a tiny tiny minority of a tiny tiny minority Islamic community in the UK but posts like yours and the attitude you present plays right into their hands - what better than to get white, Christian Britains to be the ones who start a 'Holy War' !!

Maddi

G, Kteee - feel free to delete this one along with it, if appropriate.

Whilst my inclinations are more in keeping with yours, Maddi, than guest's, yours is not a wholly objective or necessarily accurate view. I'm not sure you know any more than I do what "most" Muslims think. I won't suggest a parallel but those in Northern Ireland who killed civilians and security forces alike were a tiny minority. The two communities still largely had views and sympathies in line with their side of the fence "Nationalist" or "Loyalist". It doesn't mean they supported terrorism, or did not wish for peace with their neighbours, but their way of life and aspirations could be seen as threatened by "the other side".

Muslims may not seem anything other than a tiny minority in the UK in percentage terms but they do number several millions. Demographically, it is a fact that Muslim families tend to be larger than average so proportionately their representation in wider society will grow.

The main issues as I see them are a lack of integration and the subsequent establishing of areas within the UK whose character has been completely changed. This is a departure, in scale and to some extent in its overall impact, to the comparitively painless absorbing of new arrivals in this country over the years. I would suggest many "moderate" Muslims find it hard to feel part of a British society whose own values are disappearing. Drunken, promiscuous behaviour, the erosion of our own "Christian" values (which most of us once adhered to even if not seeing them as anything really religious) must be at odds with a religion which, even practiced moderately, actually demands certain codes of behaviour.

There will come a point, in my view, where many Muslims will not have the option of fence-sitting. I believe most Muslims in Britain disapprove of our actions in Iraq, and our support of the US's policies. That is their right but I think it doesn't bode well for peaceful co-existence.

Many Imans do not speak English and their ways are at odds with a liberal society. Also, when we speak of the Muslim community we nust understand that there are factions and sects whose view are at odds. Young, "Westernised" Muslims are also unlikely to see eye to eye with someone coming in from the tribal areas of Pakistan, where Sharia law, stonings, amputations and all is practiced, for "crimes" which are almost celebrated here, eg adultery.

No, we have a situation that won't go away and which must be addressed. The utterings of woolly headed liberals are as valueless as those of the BNP. We need people in this country to buy into what we stand for. If they value what the UK is about enough to come here, they must also be prepared to shoulder the obligations that brings. I believe that implies an element of "when in Rome" but I think we may be too far down the line for us to follow the French model, which requires a secular approach to all aspects of public life, schooling etc., whilst valuing difference in a person's private affairs.

Why, oh why, do people have to be so sheep like and "buy into" some religion and get brainwashed into having to behave in a certain way?

Why can't people just individually make up their own minds what they want to believe in and how they want to conduct themselves and live their lives peacefully, without interferring with everyone else. I despair how life is going sometimes. Aren't we meant to be evolving as people and not going backwards?

Religion, as someone posted earlier in referring to Marx, was considered the "opium" of the people i.e. keep the masses down by telling them to believe that if they work really hard in this life they will earn some reward in their next life. Certain sectors of society did really well out of that one!

It seems to me that Jesus, if he existed, was a cool dude and the Bible is a very interesting book (be it fact or fiction). Shame a lot more people don't behave like him, whether you want to call it Christian or whatever. Likewise I enjoy reading a lot of Budhist ideas, but I dislike organised religion intensely, as it always seems to have that potential for brainwashing people and creating wars and tension.

Everyone should believe in what they want and not try to enforce it on everyone else. I don't tell people they all have to listen to loud rock music, so why should anyone tell me I have to to worship God, Allah or Budha :?

Actually on second thoughts maybe everyone should listen to very loud rock music, smash their house up a bit and throw a few TV's out of the window and then they might have got rid off all that pent up anger and frustration and be more tolerable and decent outside their homes...just a thought

Hey Chinese

What a well written and intelligent argument you present - it was a pleasure to read whilst not entirely agreeing with all my ramblings you did not feel the need to be abusive or derride my view in order to make your point.

I agree with much of what you say and respect your view where it differs from mine. Although I would like to say I am not sure where in my post I claim to know what "most muslims think".

I think the greatest compliment you can pay to each other on here is that being respectful in presenting argument afterall with very few exceptions there are none of us who can be wholly objective or accurate - most arguments posted on virtually any subject are presented from the perspective of the writer and are at best "educated opinion".

Anyway Chinese thanks again for an articulate post.

Thanks, Maddi. I didn't mean to infer you were suggesting you knew how the majority of Muslims think, really just that perhaps no-one can, other than perhaps to sense a general unease with UK and UK policies in the "Muslim world"..
The UK's traditions and institutions have evolved from a Christian base but, although I was baptised into the Cof E, I don't have any religious beliefs.

Benchmark

The changing face of Leicester is one of the places to watch for the future shape of Britain's ethnic minorities.

Almost 30% of the midland's city's population were non-white in 1991. One manifestation of this is that the city's Sikhs and Hindus hold the biggest Diwali celebrations outside India.

The local council’s analysis of school pupil figures suggests that white people will be in the minority by 2011.
