I really don't want to say exactly what our "pool problem" was as it could spoil things for other holiday makers (not just those staying at Cassa Marric)
It wasn't anything dangerous to do with the maintenance and safety of the pool - it was more like "an act of nature".
No villa/pool owner could have done anything to prevent it happening at the time or again in the future. But it did ruin our holiday and I feel that more could have been done on our return to show that the villa owners did actually care!

No Trish, I am absolutely serious!
I saw this forum and initiated this debate by posing the first query as "indesisive".I susequently registered and chose Alloway as a name because it's a nice place and I am usually quite decisive in everyday life.
All I am trying to do is find a villa for next July.
Mansie very kindly replied .I contacted her by a private e-mail in which she gave me a lot of detail about her holiday problem.
No,I do not take safety issues lightly but my original query was about finding and choosing a villa -not entering into a general debate.

Hi Alloway,
Glad you are getting some help from Mansie with your search for a good villa and sorry for thinking you might have been sarcastic in previous post. Sometimes the forum does get messages on suggesting that people who want accommodation with all the conveniences as near as possible etc. then they shouldnt bother leaving home
So hope you make a decision soon and have a great holiday. 
Mansie - you really will be getting people's curiosity going now with this 'act of nature' concerning the pool. We had the most terrible thunderstorm here this morning which woke me up early hence my 'got out of bed on the wrong side mood' before.
the kids were convinced they weren't going to see me alive again when I walked to the paper shop during a lull but it was good to know that they love me really

I'm not really sure we want or need to know what the "act of nature" was. As Mansie has told us, nobody could have prevented it happening, so the problem, as I understand it, is not what happened, but how it was handled at the time.
There are some precautions one can take, both as an owner and as a guest to minimise the impact of these unfortunate episodes:
1. A good local management company, who can investigate and contact the owner or even fix it immediately helps a lot.
2. Failing this, a telephone call to the owner at time of problem is more likely to elicit sympathy and remedial action rather than a complaint after the event.
Please be ssured, I'm not attempting to apportion blame in Mansie's case. we just do not have sufficient information to attempt that.
I'm discussing the issue in general.
Speaking from minimal experience of only 2 very minor episodes in 5 years renting. The first was resolved in minutes on the telephone and to both sides satisfaction, but the second related to a party who rented our place for 2 weeks, then wrote at the end to complain that the baby chair tray was unservicable and they wanted a refund.
While we had no problem whatsoever making the refund, we did wonder why they didn't ask our managers to replace/fix the item right at the start of the holiday. Surely the holiday would have been more enjoyable ?
Especially the baby's

The pool incident happened on a Sunday - the Maid/Manager's day off.Because we were so upset we phoned the owners in England. They did respond well at the time and did what they could to try to sort it out.
I wrote a letter on our return as I was suprised that they hadn't been in contact with us since the incident - I still feel to this day (a year later) that they never fully appreciated how our holiday was totally spoilt. I feel that I have acted responsibly and fairly throughout
I never asked for any form of refund or compensation - I would have appreciated some sort of goodwil gesture that's all.
I can understand that this must be making people curious - not my intention I can assure you!

Mansie, I sorry this spoilt the holiday but I'm beginning to wonder now how serious the problem was. You have taken this subjet so far now even to the extent that you named the owners who I hope read this thread and respond themselves. Being a villa owner and having management on the ground so to speak including emergency mobile numbers gives me confidence in getting things sorted out. But the way this thread is running without any knowledge of what happened, I'm beginning to lose sympathy in a similar to way to how Steen reacted. I wish you well and it's a great shame but if you are to contribute to this thread any more, then let's here what occured. Mike

Mike - I'm not asking for sympathy - yours or anyone elses - I've only continued with this topic by responding to other peoples comments. Yes I've named the owners but then as everyone knows the name of the villa in question what does that matter

I have some part to play in opening up the debate and really had hoped this topic would give forum members the opportunity to discuss the sort of things that can go wrong and how best to remedy them. I really thought it would interesting to debate the topic from both the holidaymaker and villa owner perspectives - it does appear to have gone somewhat awry with everybody's natural fascination about what could have occurred and as I mentioned in an earlier posting I, too, had to fight the temptation to email you and ask (because I knew it was irrelevant to the wider debate and was just me being nosey ).
The forum is used very much by first time visitors to CVO to ask the same few questions - What is the weather like in a given month? What is the Villa (name) like? Do we need to hire a car and where from? What other attractions are nearby? Can anybody recommend a restaurant? Directions and how long from Faro?
Virtually all of us start our forum life in this way, and once we have found our feet help others who pose the same question a short while later - this is what it is all about, but I personally think it is useful to open wider debates to keep the forum alive, to keep those of us who may have the answers to the regular questions interested in visiting the forum and posting responses.
So Mansie, please, please don't stop posting (you could take an easy one next time like "what is the weather like in October?" - just to get you back in the swing of things ).
