FIRE!
Fire
07.45 - quite clear. Windy. Blue skies with a few clouds. Maybe it has passed?
Dutch morning paper says today that dutch tourists are between the fire and the sea and may get closed in bij the flames. Fires on the right and on the left side, before them the burning Monchique and the sea behind them. Jacques en Hanneke Lardenoye, living in Ferragudo say that the fire is about 12 kilometers away from them, that they can't see a thing through the clouds of smoke and the fine ash that is coming down. They think the situation is threatning. They also have little trust in the blushhelikopters, because up to now they have seen one and only once. Locals say that the situation there is very dangerous. It seems that the fire is heading for Aljezur. So far the dutch morningpaper.
Must be 'De Telegraaf' Henriette, as if the situation is not (...was not...) bad enough, they try and make it look even worse. So far there is nor was any danger in the past couple of days for the tourist areas such as Carvoeiro or Ferragudo.

glad to hear this! It is another prove that newspapers are not always to be trusted. It was indeed the Telegraaf. We were just thinking of cancelling our trip to Carvoeiro september 2th, but we wait till we know more. We pray that the fires will stop, not only for the people there but also for the nature in Portugal, that we love so much.

Hopeful signs?
Thanks for your positive words Rob --they cheer us who sit here waiting and watching anxiously for signs that the fires may be coming to an end.
Youre right Henriette. Although human lives have to be the priority, think of all the wildlife that must have been destroyed-- not only the animal world but trees that can takes years to be replaced. I suppose those like the eucalyptus that have volatile oils must have added fuel to the flames.
Though some species of plant life can survive the fiercest heat and new green shoots will appear miraculously.
Not so for we humans though and our thoughts and prayers must be for all who have lost their lives. God rest them and give their families comfort at this dreadful time,
love Elle

heart on fire
During my many visits the beauty of the algarve has really set my heart on fire.
Now I see that such beauty is destroyed by real fires, most probably caused by lunatics who set the algarve on fire rahther than being able to experience and feel its beauty and respecting it.
I hope those who are to blame will be punished wisely!

Sorry
I like others cannot priase the firefighters enough and all the volunteers, I for one was being a little selfish thinking that my holiday was goin got be ruined......but life is a lot more important...I am travelling to Ferragudo in 12 days time and cannot wait my first visit to Portugal!!!!!
I hope the country can get back to normal life as quickly as possible and the people responsible for the arson are dealt with in the strongest possible way....there is no place on this earth for people like that...
Some nice words from people on here...great site......

Thank God - whoever he may be for each and every one of you - despite my prayers being ansered in the latter stages of the last few days, let us not forget the firefighters that have lost their lives and their families, and whoever your God may be I hope we can all take a moment to think about them and then do what we can in practical terms to help.
