I have a digital television in UK. Does anybody know if it will work if I bring this out to Carvoeiro?

I think I am right in saying if you want to pick up the UK channels then yes, but not if you want to receive the Portuguese channels. Unless the new TVs have newer technology. Or I could be totally wrong. Our older UK TVs are ok with the Sky box, but don't get sound for the Portuguese channels. We bought new TVs here eventually so that we could get everything.

Thank you for that. I just want to be able to get Englsih channels, but someone told me that an UK set would not work in Portugal. However, they may have meant a non-digital one ??

When you say Digital television, do you mean it has a freeview digital tuner built in. If so it won't work. However connecting a sat digibox to one of the scart inputs (AV1 best) will work.

Any TV brought from the UK will work in conjunction with a Sky satellite system (though the use of Sky satellite systems is not permitted in Europe even though we all know that it happens). You can use a Sky Digibox or a Sky+ Digibox and receive any Sky TV programs as if you were living in the UK. Just don't try to connect the Digibox to the telephone line and don't telephone Sky complaining about loss of signal or whatever. However, your UK purchased TV will not be able to receive Portuguse terrestrial channels (e.g. RTP1, RTP2, SIC and TV1).

The UK TV is probably also suitable for receiving TV Channels broadcast on a cable network but you should check this out.

Mike (see last post) is correct. What do you mean by a Digital TV? Be careful of terminology.

Finally, why bring a TV from the UK? TVs tend to be cheaper here than the UK nowadays though you may not yet be able to get the latest 36+ inch LCD. I understand though that you can buy 50 inch plasma here at a very reasonable price.

Thank you for your replies. My digital is the latest Samsung LCD HD ready, and the reason I ask is that we intend to retire permanently in the Algarve and obviously will want to bring a lot of stuff with us, and the TV is only a few weeks old !!

CC: You should have no trouble connecting up to a sat box which you will need to receive UK broadcasts. If you need any help with set ups, supply of dish etc, pm me and i'll put you in touch with the chap who looks after our set up on Carvoeiro.
