Algarve at Christmas
agree with you totally about hot+ buns Dave--getting nostalgic now I am!--they once were only available on Good Fridayyes? Remember my late Mum sending me to bakers at 8am to line up for hot fresh buns which we had for breakfast on just that special day!
apart from our 2001 Xmas in CVO--Ive only spent 2 there -when we lived in Lagoa--and I dont remember much hype at all --only a couple of weeks beforehand--and there was no big Intermarche there then--just the little shops --a much simpler --and therefore a more real feeling of the festive season.What I do remember though --is wondering why men were putting up scaffolding etc above the streets of Lagoa in late October! On asking my friend Maria-she said theyre getting them ready for the Christmas lights! i laughed about this----but boy! When they did come on just before Christmas --they were really wonderful and stayed on well into January! i love the Portuguese Xmas cards too --and isnt it nice there --that when you buy even the simplest of gifts --that they are so nicely wrapped ?
My sympathies to you on loss of parents--we both lost our Mums 2 years ago -within 2 months of each other--and I still cant believe they have gone--we 're still children inside arent we and life is never quite the same again.
But I always feel great when Im back inAlgarve & CVO--feeling part of that community --a bit like being with family!

Yes, Ellie, you are getting nostalgic, but I share your views. I think we should try Carvoeiro next year at Christmas. How is Maria getting on at the Pastelaria - I must admit every time we go for a coffee there is very few people in there. It is mainly locals that go there, so are there less locals going - and why? Dave.

yes,Im afraid it was like that at Marias pastelaria still,when we were there for September.We visited quite a few times and the most we saw at one visit were just people at two other tables.
On the first visit of our hol,we walked in and was still greeted by Marias sweet smile and she and her mother put their arms round me kissing both cheeks as usual--but---theres a sad look in their eyes--almost an inevitability--that things are not going to change. I feel very much for thema si remember them in happier times.
Maria puts on a brave face-for her mothers sake no doubt--when i asked her if not having the road affected their trade--she just shrugged --smiled--and said --"well its okay and we dont have the pollution fromtraffic"
But I visited her at different times of the day--and the situation was still the same.I must confess--I worry about them.
Apart from when we sat in the park there having lunch at the cafe--I saw hardly any people around--the place seemed a ghost town to its former days.
Wish I could tell you more cheerful news Dave, I really do.
Try CVO at Christmas --we enjoyed last one in 2001--lots of folk around -quite a few shops still open--and temps around 70--some days higher!
