Sky

Post by mcgarvie »

Hello
I am sure this topic has been covered before, but cannot find the thread.
Do you need a UK address to have Sky in CVO, or is there a way round it. We will be moving out to CVO soon we hope, and will not be keeping a UK residence. If there is a posting regarding this, can someone let me know.
Cheers

:( My limited understanding is that BSkyB do not have a license to operate outside the UK, but being a satellite service, dishes can be tuned to receive the Sky signal and the local authorities tend not to take any interest.

Sky cannot knowingly activate a Sky card without a UK address. Hence the need to provide them with one, and normally a credit card to bill.

 Everybody does it, so as long as you can provide a UK address there isn't a problem.

Hope this helps

You need a bigger dish though. There are TV engineers in the cvo area who support this sort of thing.

There are places advertised in the local papers providing cards too as well as all the kit, so maybe they register the cards in the UK.
Have a look at the Portugal News and Residents' websites, there may be something on there.

Sky world will do the whole thing for you 934448837 although if you do not want movies or sport just get a freesat card ie no cost apart from the card approx £20 ( obviously except box and dish )

This may be slightly off subject but is related to Sky. When in CVO over xmas I noticed my sky was breaking up a lot on certain channels at certain times of day - it seemed to be bbc channels during the evening and a lot of the time was to the extent that it was unwatchable. Before I bother getting an engineer out I wonder anyone can tell me whether this is a typical experience? Is this something we just have to put up with because of the weakness of the signals/positioning of the transmitting sattelites, or is it just me and perhaps my dish is not correctly positioned? :?

Any advice gratefully received... :)

We ended up using the Satellite dish on our roof (belonging to the bar downstairs) and getting the people in Cvo (the ones in the udnerground shopping bit) to put in a freeview box for us. If we want to watch football we go downstairs and watch on sky, and we get most normal channels on the freeview box. This means we don't have a monthly charge.

Rob, one of our guests had the same problem at Xmas. I think the high winds and rain in Nov/Dec may have shifted the dish slightly. I'm out on the 12th March to have a look at it and will report back on the outcome.

Rob, there's a number of things that can cause your problem. Weather is one of them, heavy rain will attenuate the signal substantially. If the dish isn't aligned properly or if the cabling is damaged, old or damp.

We had to buy a bigger dish because from about 6pm the signal on certain channels broke up. Now all channels are fine.

Thank you all for the replies. I think Mike you may have a point re the bad weather in Nov/Dec - our system is only about a year old and I never noticed a problem until we were there at xmas - when we were out in Sept it was fine. I'll get the positioning of the dish checked I think.

Thanks again everyone :D

Rob, I too suffered interference on specific channels at approximately the same time of day during late November/early December (BBC2 and Channel 4 I seem to remember). I do have a big dish so it may well be down to the dish alignment. I'm coming out again at the end of February - so let's keep in touch on this one.

Rob, I was Mikes' guest. Around about 3.30 pm all the ITV stations broke up and were unwatchable until the next morning. At about 8.30 pm all the BBC stations did the same.

Another solution to the post-6pm problem is to fit a bigger/stronger LNB (thats the little box of tricks in the middle of the dish with the wire coming out of it). We did this last year (cost circa €80 from R J Technica) and could now stay in all night watching TV - if we wanted to.

are you sure your post 6 pm viewing problem has nothing to do with your alcohol consumption ? :D
