I totally agree with you all that back Steen, I also think he deserves a BIG bottle of port. I think some of you are forgetting if it wasnt for Steen we would have no forum at all and if you want a prize for posting a subject maybe you are on the wrong site. This site is for lovers of Carvoeiro lets keep it that way, this is our lifeline to Carvoeiro when we are sitting at home on a cold wet day what better than to look into the site's web cam and dream of our next holiday, and have a bit of banter with like minded people. I think the original post was tongue in cheek but its now getting personal and nasty. Dont worry Steen I think your doing a marvellous job. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!! :D

I guess I am the only one then who thought that Steen appeared to get a bit narky himself in response to that original humourous comment!

I am perfectly happy to see Steen bite back but it felt to me that we all got tarred with the same brush - clearly just me then!!

no i also think his reply showed a rather poor view of those who support his web site...and while we all may value his work he also should value ours.

dear guest,...i guess i'm a little slow, but exactly what "work" are you refering to?
Peter Belinfante

Post by Peter Belinfante »

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I'm a simple Dutchman and I don't understand the idiocy in this topic and also not at the otherone about "getting a price".

First off all I think that everyone has to sign in with his own name and not with "guest" or an "alias"!

I'm comming to Carvoeiro just since 1998. A schoolfriend of my brother invited me and my family. He is allready living for more than 20 years in Carvoeiro.
Everytime I'm in Carvoeiro it's if I'm back home again.
Everywhere I come the people are nice; in the restaurants, shops, at the beaches, in CarvoeiroSol where I have stayed several times, the Portuguese I have met, an so on.
Last year I have been in Carvoeiro: alone in April; together with my wife in May; in July with the whole family for three weeks and in October with my daughter. And it is every time a joy to be there.
Maybe because of my friend or because of my roots who are from Portugal (look at my surname: Belinfante).

I can't understand the "nagging" in the direction of Steen. He has done a very good job with carvoeiro.com
When I'm back home in the cold, rainy and dull Holland, it is a pleasure every day to look at the site. From a distance I still have contact with a part of the world I'm very fond of. And when I read the comments about "wanting to have a price" I feel sad :( ; why are there people who only think materialistic.

Let's enjoy this site, this Forum and offcourse Carvoeiro! I hope that this childish behaviour will stop soon! :!:

And Steen; credits for You and this perfect site! Keep on going! 8)

Greetings to all the people in the Forum from a not anonimous simple Duthman. :!:
(sorry if I make mistakes in my English writing)

Agent Elle calling ----- just been rescued from deep darkest FenLand ! What "is" going on here? I cant have this !!
How dare you speak of my lovely wonderful Boss M - Martin this way!
Im completely broken-hearted.
I must ask you to withdraw those remarks calling him an "old misery" --old?----you must be joking. have you read his imput into A Favourite Spot --well over 900 of you have - it takes time and effort to produce witty & funny material -- I enjoyed my bit! and the stimluation of "A Piri Piri Affair" ! Whatever his age he is young inside--thats what counts -- I would rather call "some others" miseries. But come now, please, please everybody, lets not quarrell, lets all lighten-up a little -- surely we all appreciate everyone who works & contributes to this great site& Prize orNo- Kiss& make-up. How nice to see our Dutch friend Peter Belifante on the forum -- welcome Peter-- dont worry, youre English is fine. I undestand how you feel about sunny Carvoeiro -- Im in chilly (but sunny)N.E. Uk--opposite your coast.
My son teaches English in Holland (near Almelo) and has made some wonderful Dutch friends --they have an open invitation to visit us here any time.
Do hope you, your wife,& daughter continue to have lovely times in Carvoeiro--its our second home too --- we have to wait till september for holiday.
My son is home on holiday--but missing some Dutch food --- specially the "pickled herring" & a meal he had at his friends parents farmhouse -- pork sausage with cold apple sauce;also missing pretty Dutch girlfriend!
Have a great time on the forum. Elle.

Some seem to find my answer a little harsh. Let me explain;

Firstly it applies to the “guest” only. The “guest” has already initiated the topic “prize for the most read forum subject” and made 4 posts as an anonymous user and yet another signed with his user name, not satisfied with the delay I’ve taken to reply he initiates a second topic, this time SHOUTING: “WHAT TIME DO WE COLLECT THE PRIZE”. This is a somewhat impolite behaviour in my book and I see no need to encourage such. Further he continues that I do not value his work, what work does he refer to?

Secondly, I fail to see the point in rewarding “the most read subject” a prize; at the moment it is from Michael asking advice travelling to Lisbon from Carvoeiro – Should I send him a bottle of port? I am sure Michael wouldn’t mind but will it improve future postings?

Thirdly, this is your forum, you might be locals, regulars or first timers to Carvoeiro, and properly used this forum will provide a knowledgebase for visitors to the town. By sharing good and bad experiences you’ll be rewarding those doing an honest job and help the less gifted to do a better job. Would it improve credibility if regular users were awarded prizes by local businesses they might be called upon to evaluate, such as a restaurant or hotel?

Those who use the forum on a regular basis and answer questions should sign up with a username so less frequent visitors are able to judge the quality of replies by viewing a “usernames” history.

I have a few tools policing this board, such as recording IP addresses; in this case I’ve used them to determinate that all this “guest”’s postings corresponds with the same IP address as well as a certain username. An anonymous user can otherwise seemingly debate with him/her-self and inflate the weight of their opinions [re: THE TREMENDOUS DEMAND]. I could easily limit posting to registered users but feel it is unfair dragging casual visitors through the hassle of registration for a one of question.

Some of the forum members have provided many hundred valuable answers over the time; Gambrinus alone have supplied 48 within the past 2 months and I dare not think of how many over the past nearly 5 years. Maybe we can agree upon that anyone receiving an answer sends a kind thought to whoever answers? It is all those of us making modest contributions to the local community need and ask for.

I'll settle for the recognition

I think we all like a little recognition --thats what nice about this site -- we can have it and feel we are amongst friends,hopefully-- after all, we are all in the B.O.C,(brotherhood of carvoeiro) arent we? Lets keep it friendly guys and not get too uptight--it started humouresly lets keep it that way.
Remember our Oscar(Wilde)s words:
Life is too important to be taken seriously !
P.S. If my novel gets published, Ill dedicate it to this site --promise!

Ice Cream Joke

Post by biffa »

This isn't worth a bottle of port or a Rover but it's probably topical?

Shopowner found dead outside his ice cream parlour covered in hundreds and thousands

Police believe he may have topped himself!

pip pip!

Well done Biffa !
Youve set the ball rolling for a lighter mood -- like the joke and like the icecream palacio -- a little too much ! Enjoy your weekend! Elle.

Hi Steen,
There's an old adage that goes " You can't please all the people all of the time" and I think you have probably demonstrated this on these pages.
We think you do an excellent job and have assisted me personally in the past.
Thanks for everything.
Kev and Shirl.
