I know this isnt really to do with Carvoeiro but tying up with Ellies Calma topic maybe it has.We are all part of the E.U and so what happens to a part of it can well effect the rest.
I sit here and wonder if there will ever be peace in those counties of Ulster and when I see the election results with the DUP under Mr Paisley and there intransigent position re:they refuse to sit down and talk with Sinn Fein,I somehow doubt there ever will be peace.
At the same time I realise that the terrorists are alive and well and only a weeks or so ago the French authorities arrested those involved in attacks in Brittany that were linked with real IRA also the Basque movement.
Many of us travel widely in Europe and we have to be aware that these men of evil will operate at will with complete disregard for Human life.
I just hope wish and pray that peace will come to the troubled North of Ireland and surely it will only come about with the parties talking together.
Of course it is always going to be hard for good decent men to have to sit down with former terrorists and murderers.But it has been done before and Kenya was a prime example.
I pray for peace in that troubled corner of the United Kingdom.Amen.

At long last the two extremist groups are in the majority, and now the time has come when they have to negotiate head to head, in one guise or another. There will of course be a period of neurotic politics, with each side blaming the other, but at the end of the day both sides will have to make significant concessions, and take on their own 'hard men'.
Both groups claim that they want devolved government in N.I., so now its time for the final showdown, a modern day verbal gunfight at the OK Corral. As South Africa showed the only way there is ever going to be a lasting solution is when the extremists reach agreement.
Paisley is now a dinasaur, and will not be around much longer. His party lieutenants are much more politically aware that they will have to ease back on their tribal protestations, they are already embarrassed by the old mans recent outbursts. Both sides have tasted devloved government and are hungry for more, and this time they will be in the driving seat

Unfortunately whilst most men act like spoilt little brats there will always be trouble in this world.
Mo Mowlam was the best thing that happened to N.I. and look what happened to her - stabbed in the back by Blair and the other tossers.
If more women were able to get into politics then the world would be a better place.
And women could make a start by refusing to cook the Christmas Dinner -its not being cooked in our road this year - us women are off to the pub

Id like to add my sincere good wishes to Peacmans and pray that all will finally come through well with the North.Ire.parliament.
It was so good to hear about the situation from Rod;a man who has (from his location) and is, living with the problems on a day to day basis.
I believe many of us in the UK dont and probably never have,really understood all the problems in Ulster and its only those that have had to live with the recent troubles of past 30years that can truly speak with authority.
Although I was a member of the labour party(but no longer) I was horrified at the way convicted murderers were so readily let out of prison.Imagine how you would feel to see the person responsible for your loved ones or friends murdersuddenly given their freedom as if nothing has happened
As for Mo Mowlam.The less said the better.Is she still doing the rounds selling her book
Why does anyone have to cook Xmas dinner.We can all take a break;get away somewhere.In CVO it can be Maximes- O'Patio-Columbos.
Guest it isnt only women who cook.Quite a few men I know do it regularly,.including Xmas Din Din.

Guest---you say if there were more women in politics there would be less trouble in the world---do you have any particular women MPs in mind?
Margaret Thatcher was our Primeminister for 11 years --but I dont recall her doing much for women at all--did she in fact --have any women in her cabinet--all I remember was Edwina Currie in a junior position.
I was a young mother during Thatchers reign and I had quite a hard time of it --dont recall her helping the likes of myself at all.
oh and dont forget---in todays world of terrorism there are many young women that are signing up as suicide bombers ---women can be just as --if not more aggressive as men.
Whether male or female ---I think if there were more leaders like Nelson Mandela maybe the world would be a safer place. A man incarcerated for 27 years --many of them spent with just a cold stone floor for his bed-- he emerged an old but certainly not a bitter man--surely hes a great example for all men & women.
Ive spoken of Mandela --but who would be your choice for a good leader --man or woman?
Are there any leading women MPs in Northern Irelands planned parliament---from what Ive read today--David Trimble looks likely to be replaced--is there a woman there to take over his position and maybe give more balance to the situation?
Would be nice to see some younger fresh faces there--think perhaps Adams&Paisley are just reminders of the bad old days!

Rod, I bow to your knowledge regarding the two parties now facing each other both, dyed in the wool extremists, both hating each other and those surrounding them feeling the same, meanwhile the people still wait for a real peace. I wish they would get rid of the nutters and bring in some new faces, perhaps some young people from the mixed religion schools would make more sense and probably run the troubled land in a better way, and us on the mainland should let them get on with it and not interfere.
hp, I think you should stop shouting and treat a serious subject with a bit of sense without swearing and claiming what should and shouldn't be allowed on this site or just sit on your hands like any one with nothing constructive to say on such a subject should

Think it's time to put this subject to bed which reminds me time for my kids to go beddy byes - will try not to put on my dragon act!
Had a busy day sorting out their grown out of clothes, toys, books, coats etc. for a little 4 year old whose Mum has got Aids - unfortunately she couldn't get the treatment she wanted in S. Africa. Some people would argue she shouldn't be getting the treatment here? But why should her little one suffer as do all the little ones through out the World
Sometimes women see life from a different perspective! And try and teach our little ones about the life ahead instead of prejudices from the past?

What youve just written about(AIDS)is a serious subject and maybe you would have been better to have spoken of this on your previous posting instead of putting silly disparaging generalising remarks about men.
Also what was "who cooks the Christmas dinner" to do with Northern Irelands problems pray?
Seems like you just have a case against men and that women can solve all the worlds problems
Think again! There are just as many men doing good works and helping the sick and suffering in the world as there are women,4 of whom are my 2 sons,son-in -law and myself.
I have had equal share in my childrens upbringing and hopefuly instilled a real sense of caring for others without prejudice.
As a very caring husband,father and grandfather I feel rather insulted by your remarks

I would suggest 'Head Cook' that instead of feeling insulted by Guest's remarks that you consider what her experience of life is for her to hold such views and attitudes. We all get our attitudes and opinions mainly from what are our social norms and therefore it is possible that for Guest, she grew up in an environment where the men went to the pub and the women did all the housework, cooking and caring and perhaps this has perpetuated into her adult life and own domestic situation.
The women in your life, your partner, your daughter will simply have a different life experience and I am totally with you on this - I know where and with whom I would rather be but we don't all have those choices and that experience.

I couldnt agree more Loretta----and although I dont belong to any political party at present--I still shudder when I recal the "poll tax" days 
I noticed a book my son was reading last night---Bram Stokers "Dracula"----wonder why someone called "Michael Howard" came to mind
