Speaking as a simple minded soul, can anyone explain to me why they cannot allocate a seat number when you check - in ? They are able to allocate you a group in which you will be allowed to board so why not a seat ?

Ive never been able to understand that one either.
They say to reduce administration, yet Monarch allocate.

I think its pure bloody mindedness now. They never have allocated, it's part of their style....so why change now?

They have proved that by not allocating seat numbers they can board the plane much faster (as everyone rushes to get the seats they want) thereby turning the plane around quicker, which means they are in the air quicker makes more money for them.

One thing I will say for Easyjet, is that their punctuality is pretty good. Unlike Monarch who run late in and out of Faro 73% of the time.

We have used Monarch on many occasions over the last 10 years and have always been ontime both ways, guess we have been lucky. Liz

Sorry Bruce but I agree with Liz on this one with the exception of a 4hr delay for fog and easyjet cancelled both Luton and East Midlands. At least we got home the day we intended to.

The figure I quoted was the official reliability figure for the last year!

Just travelled with Monarch both ways to the UK, they were the cheapest, the service was excellent & we left on the dot & arrived slightly ahead of schedule. Nice to be able to reserve seats & extra legroom, the cost of their meals & drinks are reasonable as well.
When we flew Ryanair once with a group of 6 friends my husband nearly fell out of the plane at the cost of a round of drinks for everyone. Mind you tickets were from Stanstead to Italy & only cost about £30 inc. tax so they gotta make their money somewhere.

We have used Monarch many times. In fact we are flying with them in December. I have been very happy with them and will use them in the future. Also used EJ, but it is a bit of a scramble. On Monarch I have already reserved our seats and I will be using their online check-in too - it saves a good deal of time and queuing up.

We don't have a problem with Monarch short-haul but once flew with them to Male and that was a nightmare.

I have travelled wtih Monarch a few times to Faro. They were late every time and the flights were more expensive once you added taxes on.

However, it was nice to be able to upgrade to decent seats!

THEy also don't fly on a Friday which is when I want to come out.

we travelled with Monarch in September out of Birmingham. Booked the flights over a year in advance and then found later that I could have got them cheaper with Easy Jet out of East Midlands. The only plus with Monarch is that you can reserve your seats in advance. They are very slow when it comes to boarding and the stairs when landing back in Birmingham were very rickety

We always use Monarch out of Manchester, and the only time we have ever been late taking off, it was due to a passenger who failed to get to the gate at the right time. We find their pricing structure is very strange, but when you can be flexible with dates, you can get the lower prices. We also like to pre-book the seats and check-in online, which saves a lot of queuing.

Incidentally, Charliegill, I don't think you can blame the airline for the state of the steps at Birmingham airport - they are the responsibility of the ground handling agents.

Monarch use the same handling agent (Swissport) and equipment at their Manchester and Birmingham bases.

Since this EasyJet topic seems to have wandered into discussing Monarch.

Monarch have amazing bargains on LGW to FAO for Xmas - provided you choose your dates carefully. e.g. Out on Dec 13/14 and return on Boxing day (Dec 26) for £43.25 pp return. Return a day or two later and the price goes up quite a bit. Come back on Jan 2nd and it'll cost £206 pp return.

Now thats seasonal pricing for you :?
