Restaraunt Prices 1994

Post by Mike,Chislehurst »

Having a clearout the other day and found an O' Cantino (still my favorite) bill from 1994! Made interesting reading! Now I can't remember the escudo excange to the euro but I think I'm right in saying that 300 escudos was about a pound! here's what we had!
Cover 200
Tomato soup 300
Fish soup 400
Filet Mignon 1600
Gin & T 350
Small beer 200
Bottle of Red (middle of the road) 1200
Coffee 150
So how does that equate with the general prices now and has the euro really made a difference. I'm not so sure.

..1 euro is worth 200.482 escudos....
..circa '94 I think a pound was worth about 250 escudos......it later went on to be worth 330

what was the price of wine in the restaurant? Wasn't it a bit of a pain having to go out to drink it?

Hmmmm, might just go over and compare today's prices, but to be fair to cantinho, I think we can safely say that pull the decimal forward 2 notches and these are todays prices in most restaurants.

In other words, prices have doubled over the last 10 years while the average salary only increased somewhere around 30%.

This years bill for two on our last night in June came to 45 euros Gerry, spot on I make it. Might sound boring but it was very much the same line up as in 1994 but the chips have improved! Mike

Incredible that is......... I made a small conversion and here are the
prices you paid back than in EUro's:

Cover 1,26
Tomato soup 1,89
Fish soup 2,52
Filet Mignon 10,08
Gin & T 2,20
Small beer 1,26
Bottle of Red (middle of the road) 7,56
Coffee 0,95

All together the meal costed you: 26,40 Euro's

Now you probably will pay:

Cover 3,50
Tomato Soup 5,00
Fish Soup 6,50
Filet Mignon 14,50
G&T 3,50
Beer 1.75
Red Wine 12 Euro
Coffe 1,50

Price now: 48,25 almost double (or more)!

INCERDIBLE!!!

sounds about right. same here in holland. its why we hate the euro.

gotta say though 45 euros a meal for two including some wine etc is quite cheap. i wouldnt be unhappy with that sort of prices.

Don't forget that this years figue was for two people and the original 1994 was for one. I just highlighted the individual courses and left out where we doubled up. Hope this clarifies the situation. Mike

Right, here we go. The total bill for two was 6480 escudos. At the euro rate mentioned earlier by digger (I think) thats 34.17 euros. Last Junes bill was 45 euros. 10 years on. Slightly less than inflation me thinks. Anyway I think Cantino is the mutts nuts whatever the price! Mike
